calculating an effect size from percentages

Hello,

I have one question about calculating effect sizes from percentages. The study I am interested in reported percentage with standard error for 2 groups, and a chi-squared from Kruskal-Wallis Median test. I assume the data is not normally distributed and I cannot use percents as means + SE to calculate the ES. Do you maybe have some advice on calculating the effect size from these data?
