How best should one hunt down fugitive literature?

Members to this site might be interested in a post in the finding relevant literature group, addressing how to find qualifying studies whose abstracts omit necessary information. They may have focused on some other aspect of their results to the exclusion of the dimension that interests you. Google Scholar may not be that optimal a solution...
